Detection of the red palm mite (Raoiella indica) in Cancun and Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, Mexico

The National Service for Plant Health, Food Safety and Agri-Food Quality (SENASICA) has confirmed the presence of the red palm mite (Raoiella indica) in Isla Mujeres and Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico.
This detection of the red palm mite was the result of phytosanitary surveillance activities by the Quintana Roo Plant Health State Committee. As a result of the detection, the action plan to characterize areas with presence of the red palm mite is been applied and to determine possible risk areas in order to apply the phytosanitary measures.
Under the International Plant Protection Convention, Raoiella indica is considered to be a quarantine pest that is present in Cancun and Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, and subject to official control.
